Dr. Claire Elizabeth Varney
Dr. Claire graduated in 2007 from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine. After practicing for two years at a rural veterinary hospital in Roseburg, Oregon, she returned to her home area in the North Willamette Valley. She currently balances the veterinary profession with volunteering for Silverton Fire District. Dr. Varney is passionate about connecting with the community while improving the longevity and quality of life of her patients. Following a day of work, she spends time with her goat herd, a free-range rabbit named Henrietta, a grey and white cat named Bentley, and her friendly chickens. Dr. Varney enjoys climbing mountains, working with small ruminants, singing a capella, and visiting foreign countries.
Amy has been a member of the Abiqua Animal Clinic team for 12 years and enjoys helping the animals of the Silverton area both large and small.
When she is not in the clinic, she is spending time with her husband Nathan, children Austin and Chris, and furry children, which include 3 cats (Chloe, Lord Morley, and Dr. Hodgekins), her little dog Dennis (a Brussels griffon), and her giant dog Apollo (a Great Dane/St. Bernard mix).
Amy has special interests in large animal husbandry with a focus on sheep and cattle.
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened." - Anatole France
Judy joined the Abiqua team in May 2014 as our Administrative Assistant and Bookkeeper. She plays a valuable role of behind the scenes "holding it all together" which helps keep our clinic in order.
She lives in Hubbard with her husband Steve and 1 out of 5 of her children and her darling cat Randy.
Judy is a wonderful cook (as she has demonstrated to the staff on numerous occasions) and enjoys sewing and making people smile.
Having lived in Puerto Rico for several years she has many wonderful stories of the culture and experiences and animals she has witnessed.
Isabella joined the Abiqua team in May of 2016, after volunteering off and on for a little over a year. Isabella lives at home and enjoys the company of the family's two Yorkies, Theodore and Rosabelle.
Isabella's passion and love for animals started when she was six and lived on her grandparents' farm. She has been involved in 4-H for seven years - two with horses and six with 4-H market lambs. Working with a market lamb each summer was one of the major highlights of her year!
Isabella was homeschooled all her life and recently graduated from high school. She is very excited to start the next journey of this amazing adventure we call life.
When Isabella is not playing with animals, she loves to travel, hike, hang out with friends, draw, cook, and go on mission trips when she can.
Bryant joined the team June 2016.
He has a golden retriever named Lexi and enjoys sunny weather and gardening.
Having worked at Abiqua for over 5 years prior, Allison was glad to be back and behind the front desk as of October 2014.
She lives in Silverton with her husband, Clint and her two cats T'aero and Renzo.
She is an avid artist, finding any chance she can to paint.
She enjoys spending time with her husband and friends in the outdoors -- hiking, camping and playing in the water. She loves the town of Silverton and couldn't dream of a better place to live and work.
Laura joined the Abiqua team in February 2016. She lives with her partner, Adam, and his two boys, Hayden and Soren. Laura and Adam are both endurance runners and spend as much free time as possible running the Northwest’s amazing state forest trails. They have three cats - Hawks, Bex, and Alabaster - and two ridiculously adorable guinea pigs - Strawberry and Shortcake.
Laura’s favorite thing to do is travel, and spent more than 6 years living in and traveling throughout Asia. Most of that time was in southern China where she ran a sea turtle hospital, and in Japan where she taught English. When at home, she loves to read, quilt, and bake terribly unhealthy but delicious things for other people. Laura has worked at two other Oregon veterinary hospitals and has a special interest in feline and exotic medicine.
Holly has worked at Abiqua since 2014, first as a volunteer and eventually as an official employee. She has a dog named Wade and enjoys riding horses.
Secret Agent: Marge
Marge came to the clinic at the beginning of 2017. Having put in many years sleuthing and spying in the wild, she had decided to hang up her spy gear and take on the medical field. She has feline asthma and has been actively working on a diet to decrease her weight in hopes that she will have a healthier life. She was rather shy initially, but over the last several months she has slowly been coming out of her shell. She enjoys sleeping in her shark-shaped bed during the day and romping around the clinic at night when Dr. Varney is working late. She loves to greet everyone when they arrive to work and help them with the morning duties. Her meow is particularly gruff, which makes us all have to meow back. She is our night security and with her secret agent background she is more than qualified to keep things under control. She is also working on learning some light clerical duties and has mastered making accidental phone calls (by sitting on the phone) and nonsensical notes in the computer (by running across the keyboard); but her social anxiety is currently keeping her from being able to assist full time upfront. It is our hope that she will trust people more as she comes into her own. We feel she is a good candidate because she seems to have little apprehension about the patients that flow through our doors; it’s mainly the people that she seems most tentative about. We are all very excited to have her as part of our team and hope in the coming year she will be spotted more regularly by our visitors.
